We Need You To Sponsor a Child for $350 a Year

It is really an incredible deal — to provide educational, relational, and Biblical programs for over 600 folks from around the world right here Memphis costs only about $350. This is pretty amazing when realizing just how many activities that includes — Homework Help, English Classes, Birthday Parties, Bible Clubs, Reading Programs, Preschool Readiness, Holiday Celebrations, School supplies, Camps, and more!

By September 30, 3013, MNM must raise $50,000 that goes directly to fund all of these programs and services.

We are so appreciative of the time and talent so many volunteers give to the MNM kids and families. Today, I also ask for your treasure. Please provide the funds that allow a child to benefit from ALL of the programs and services mentioned above. (A shortage of funds has caused us to have to cancel some programs this year, but we don’t want that to happen again )

Each year at camp, all of the children add their personal creativity to a community work of art. One year, every child painted a flower on the canvas. One time, they each painted a shape. Put it all together and there is a World of Art!

Movies From Around The World

Even though a number of us are somewhat annoyed at Netflix for its price changes, it still is the one place that offers something that I love — movies from other countries that just can’t be found in the vending machines.

I love watching these movies and documentaries. Granted, most are nothing like American flicks — generally they are slower (some really slow), they don’t necessarily have ’comfortable’ endings, and, you have to be in the mood to read subtitles.

But, if you want to experience a taste of what it might have been like to be born in a different country or situation, there are many foreign films that can give you a fresh perspective of ‘normal.’

While watching, I like to ponder about what if I were living in this situation? What would daily life be like? What would I believe? What would I do? What would it be like for ‘normal’ to be so different?

Because there are families from dozens countries involved with Multi-National Ministries, it is important to try to have at least a little understanding of where they came from and, perhaps, why.

On the next page are a few movies that I think are worth watching. The first and last two films are incredibly powerful but in completely different ways.

If you watch them, I encourage you to see if any of your perceptions or opinions change a bit. Maybe you would want to view and discuss one of the films with some friends, kind of like a Movie Club instead of a Book Club.

In upcoming newsletters and on our website at www. multinationalministries.org there will be more movie recommendations from all around the world. Since, indeed, the world has come to our own backyards, it’s not a bad thing to learn just a little more about it.

Two Children and One Pair of Shoes — A Must See Movie

Children of Heaven is a precious movie about a two Iranian children and a ragged pair of shoes. It reveals a side of Tehran probably quite unexpected to those of us more accustomed to a different stereotype. One reviewer eloquently described it as “one of the most gentle social commentaries you are ever likely to see, with heart wrenching performances from two young (non-actor) children. This will melt your heart.”

Have You Ever Heard About the Death Trains?

Here are a couple of movies that I think are worth watching about something that is happening today.

Which Way Home and Sin Nombre make an interesting double feature — one is fact and one is fiction, but they tell the same story.

Sin Nombre is a fictional account of families from Latin America trying to illegally migrate to the United States via the tops of moving trains.

Which Way Home covers the same subject…but it is heartbreakingly real. This well made documentary follows several unaccompanied children trying to make it across the border riding “The Beast” freight train.

“From the boys and girls riding the trains to the kids who’ve already been caught and are on their way back home, the film brings us everything we’d expect from a solid, well-made documentary — injecting passion, honesty and heart into a topic that certainly needs more attention drawn to it” (Tribeca Movie Review)

These two movies are troubling on many levels and also make me wonder what I would do if I my family were in the same situation.
